I remember once seeing the news on Facebook, blogger Dinh Hang shared about an old man named Derek, he had cancer and was cycling around the world to death, I was very impressed with his story. I thought to myself, “He’s enjoying the last few months of his life with a crazy thing, he’s happy!”
I see Derek through a picture of Dinh Hang taking him on the street and see him attend a TV show, I think he’s happy. That man is amazing, he cycled to death !!! This is insane! And maybe that moment formed something in me about cross-country cycling.
But to say that it is the main reason is not true. I still remember in 2012, when I was 22 years old, on my first trip to Vietnam on a motorcycle, I saw a picture of foreigners cycling through Vietnam on National Highway 1A, I remember meeting a very special family. cute, they look like french, the couple bikes 2, and their 2 little daughters sit in a little bike attached to the front of the father’s car. It’s a very cute picture, it makes me curious, how interesting would it be to experience the whole family with the bike riding around?
So one day I read in the newspaper that there was news about two boys Duong Xuan Phi and Nguyen Truong Giang cycling across Vietnam to deliver mail, at which point I thought, “WOW! Vietnamese do that, it’s amazing! “, it seems that every sprout of cycling in me suddenly sprouted, like a bamboo shoot that has just sprouted on the ground after many days of incubation. I texted two friends and asked to join but they refused and so I decided to go alone.
I called Mr. Lam, the brother who helped me as I traveled through Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City, who had roamed around 8 Southeast Asian countries with little money, and who also inspired me a lot. I told him about my plan and asked him to help contact someone to write a newspaper, borrow a bike, a camera, he asked me a question: “If no one borrows, no one sponsors, just borrow a frame bike, will you go? ”
I said clearly over the phone: “Yes! I’m still walking as usual! “
He wrote to me the number of Mr. Ly Doi, a Saigon reporter, Mr. Ly Doi contacted the owner of the Martin company, who is also a friend of his in the poetic world, to lend me a bike, but could not.
I called Mr Lam again, he gave me the number of Uncle Xuan Nguyen, then the president of the Hanoi Writers’ Association, who helped Lam publish the book Return, he said he would help me with the writing case. the newspaper to make money on the road. Maybe it was a very interesting experience, my trip was accidentally helped by the chairman of the Hanoi Writers Association, then by reporter Mi Ly, reporter Cao Manh Tuan (the messenger), by Mr. Phuong deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper TTXV, I never thought I wanted to meet them even though I had a dream.
And I was able to borrow a Pentax camera from Mr. Tuan along with his help writing articles on the VNA’s travel news site. I went with Mr. Doan Phuong and Mrs. Mi Ly to meet the writer Nguyen Huy Thiep and a poet Nguyen Bao Sinh at a small cafe in the old town. And then Mi Ly took me to the house of the late author To Hoai. At that point, after 49 days of his life, I met Mrs. Cuc, the wife of author To Hoai, in the small, simple house of two grandparents. That day her head was still wrapped in white grief, she told me about the simple life of the two grandparents, about the love story of Mr. and Mrs. in the war zone, she told me that she was a wealthy- I left wealth and honor to follow him , and I remember her saying that while reading poetry, I always remember the phrase, “In difficulty we find the truth”. That day I did not understand anything, but I realized how correct it was …
Looking back, I feel even more lucky, how could I meet such interesting characters at the age of 23?
Not yet surprised, I contacted Mr. Hung Wetrek to discuss his ideas, he lent me a tent, some car repair tool, camping.
I kept contacting Mrs. Kim Anh to report Vnexpress as she was the recipient of my collaborative article on the site. And I have an appointment with Ms. Xuan Tu, head of department, and reporter Huong Chi about writing articles for Vnexpress while I travel to make money on the road. Everyone said: yes !!! Hura !!!
I have borrowed almost in full, the only important thing missing is the bike. I contacted a couple of car companies but could not get sponsorship, thought for a long time and was determined to find a car, so that day, 4 days before departure, I met Mr Tam Ngo Dong through a meeting. He sent me a message on Facebook, he lent me his bike, took me to Nha Salamon Vietnam to ask to sponsor me a set of clothes and a pair of shoes that I could use on the road (before that, madam / sponsor, so you can travel across Vietnam). Then the two brothers went to Master Hung’s house (Chairman Thai Ha Book) to ask for his help, for Mr. Tam was also preparing for a trip across Vietnam to visit orphanages, and I wanted to set up a small fund for buying. warm clothes for the kids in Moc Moc, Van Ho, Son La.
The same night before departure, Tam and I went to dinner at Master Hung’s house, where we met Pham Thanh Nam (later Nam went through Vietnam), and he instructed us very enthusiastically in preparing the trip. To prepare the trip, he gave me two mantras, who helped me travel all over Southeast Asia, that is, “Just go and you will come, just knock and the door will open”. This quote not only helps me in asking for help along the way but also helps me a lot in life.
That evening, teachers and students sat with friends in the Thai Ha book-loving club until late at night to help me – the first to leave.
Mr. Dung (running across Vietnam) his friend Tam lent me the jacket given to me by Salamon to block the sun on the road. My brother gave me two boxes of Hanoi apricot umbrellas and my boyfriend at the time also packed me a lot of things. measure.
That was what I realized how much luck and help I had before I started my journey. But will things continue to be so lucky? Is it really easy on the road? We look forward to the next page together!
Perhaps the most in-depth lesson when it comes to preparation, I would choose Master Hung’s quote: “Just go and come, knock and the door will open”, or another phrase I often quote from the book. The Alchemist – also the book that inspired me to start my journey: “When you want something, the whole universe will help you achieve it!”.
These two mantras have helped me a lot during my youth journey …
