U.S. State Department adviser Joe Wright warned that Beijing could face retaliatory measures if it helps Moscow evade Western sanctions.
“If China tries to help Russia dodge sanctions or subdivide them in some way, they will be hurt,” said a foreign ministry adviser. America Derek Cholet said on March 3 that he was referring to sanctions imposed by the West on Russia, but gave no further details.
Chollet added that Western countries involved in sanctions against Russia account for about 50% of the global economy, while China about 15%.
“Any country that tries to evade these sanctions will have to face the consequences of their actions. I don’t want to say what those consequences are,” Cholet added.

Against the backdrop of repeated sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies against Russia over Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, Beijing has announced that it does not support or participate in any sanctions against Moscow.
Liu Bang, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, said on March 3, “China firmly opposes all illegal unilateral sanctions, and believes that sanctions can never be an effective way to solve the problem.”
The United States and European Union (EU) countries, as well as some countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan, have imposed a series of sanctions on Russia, such as removing some Russian banks from the SWIFT global financial system. The Russian president and the ban on Russian aircraft from entering the airspace.
The sanctions have left Russia facing a financial crisis as the ruble slumps to a record low against the dollar. The Kremlin says Western sanctions will never change Russia’s stance on Ukraine.
Some countries have also expressed opposition to Western sanctions against Russia. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro calls sanctions “crazy” and needs to stop. Mexico and Brazil also refused to impose economic sanctions on Russia.
Experts have warned that Western sanctions could affect many countries around the world, especially those that rely heavily on Ukraine and Russia for wheat or natural gas. Russia is one of the world’s largest oil and gas exporters, and Ukraine is a major transit country for Russian gas.
Russia-Ukraine has been fighting for 8 days. Russian troops have taken control of the big city of Kherson in southern Ukraine and are besieging and shelling cities including the capital Kyiv and the country’s second-largest city, Kharkiv.
On March 3, the Russian and Ukrainian delegations continued the second round of negotiations in Belarus. The two sides agreed to establish humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians from besieged areas, but no ceasefire was reached.
