Kyiv said that the Russian army is looking for weak points in the Ukrainian defense line near the Seversky Donets River in the Donbas region to carry out the river crossing operation.
“strength Russia Efforts to open up the action on Seversky Donets to create an attacking springboard were not given up.They’re probing for weak spots in the army’s defenses Ukraine”, Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Motuzyanyk said today.
The Seversky Donets River flows in a northwest-southeast direction across eastern Ukraine and is considered a natural obstacle to the advance of Russian troops.

The river originates in Russia, flows into Ukraine, then returns to Russian territory and joins the Don, creating a very complex terrain with many swamps, mudflats and horseshoe lakes. This terrain has been likened to the nightmare of any military operation.
The Russian army organized many battles across the Seversky Donets River, but suffered losses because Ukrainian artillery had pre-set coordinates at enemy positions and could set up buoys to allow tanks and armored vehicles to cross the river.
The cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, located along the Seversky Donets River, are also the last two checkpoints of the Ukrainian army in Luhansk province. Losing this area would give Russian troops an important springboard to push westward and target Kramatorsk, where the Ukrainian military command in the Donbass is located.

Severo Donetsk is located on the east bank of the Donets River with flat terrain, while the west bank of the river has high mountains and wide visibility, and there are many positions where artillery can be placed to ambush the city.
Luhansk Governor Sergei Ghede acknowledged earlier this week that the situation with Ukrainian troops in Severo-Donetsk is deteriorating against the backdrop of Russia adding troops and firepower to the fighting here and shelling suspicious positions. Ukrainian troops assemble in Lyschansk.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Motuzyanyk said the situation in the south of the country was more peaceful as Russia was trying to manage territories it had won in Kherson and Zaporozhye provinces.
Natalia Gumenyuk, a spokeswoman for Ukraine’s Southern Command, also warned that Russia was preparing to launch 40 cruise missiles from warships in the Black Sea, without providing any evidence.
As the Ukrainian war entered its 107th day, Russia intensified its offensive south of Izum, an advance that allowed them to close the siege of a large swathe of Donbass. Experts say Russia wants to quickly take full control of the Donbas region before Western heavy weapons are delivered to Ukrainian troops on the front lines.
