Ukraine claims that the growing hostility of Belarus and the joint deployment of forces from Moscow and Minsk point to the possibility of a Russian attack from Belarus.
“Aggressive words from the military and political leadership Russia and Belarus grow. The threat of Russian armed forces attacking the northern front is also increasing,” Oleksigromov, deputy chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff, told a news conference in Kyiv today.
Belarus is Ukraine’s northern neighbor. According to Gromov, there could be “an attack from the Belarusian border to cut off the main logistical artery supplying Ukraine with weapons and military equipment from the western states of Ukraine, including Poland.”
Earlier on the same day, the Belarusian security service (KGB) stated that “almost every day we see an increase in intelligence activity from Ukrainian territory and attempts to violate Belarusian airspace”.

The Russian Air Force held regular patrol flights on the Belarusian border today. Earlier this week, Minsk announced that 9,000 Russian troops and about 170 tanks had been deployed to Belarus as part of the two countries’ joint military forces. Belarus says its only tasks are defense and border protection.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of “trying to draw Belarus into war”. At the same time, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly stated that Belarus is at risk of being attacked by Ukraine.
Belarus shares a 1,085-kilometer-long border with Ukraine and is less than 100 kilometers from the closest point to the Ukrainian capital. Belarus is also a close ally of Russia, allowing its neighbors to use its territory to attack Ukraine and allegedly allowing Moscow to use its airspace to fire missiles at Ukraine.
