Six U.S. F-35A stealth fighter jets landed in South Korea today as they prepare to participate in joint exercises between the two countries.
The F-35As deployed from Elson Air Force Base in Alaska will conduct “familiarity and training flights” with South Korean fighters to improve interoperability between the two air forces. According to the US Forces Korea (USFK), the exercise is expected to last for 10 days to July 14.

“The exercise is to demonstrate the strong deterrence and defense coordination of the U.S.-South Korea alliance, while enhancing interoperability between the air forces of the two countries,” South Korea’s defense ministry added.
It was the first public deployment of stealth fighter jets to South Korea since the U.S. and South Korea held the joint exercise Vigilant Ace in December 2017. South Korea has already purchased 40 F-35As from the United States and is considering buying 20 more. South Korean F-35As will also participate in the exercise, according to USFK.
North Korea has often denounced joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises and Seoul’s weapons purchases, calling them a model of “hostile policy” and a sign that Washington’s proposed unconditional talks are “sham.” North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests with unprecedented intensity this year. Observers speculate that Pyongyang is preparing to conduct a nuclear test for the first time since 2017.
