Japanese and U.S. jets have conducted joint exercises against North Korea’s ballistic missile launch.
The Japanese Army General Staff said today that eight Japanese fighter jets and four fighter jets U.S. North Korea took part in a joint exercise in airspace west of the Kyushu region hours after launching a ballistic missile over Japanese territory.
The Japanese military said the joint exercises were conducted as “the surrounding security environment, including North Korea’s ballistic missile launches, has become increasingly dangerous.” The agency said the militaries of both countries have shown combat readiness and firm determination to respond to any situation.

The announcement came shortly after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held talks with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Commander Adm. John Aquilino.
“We need to act quickly,” Kishida told reporters, adding that Tokyo and Washington had “decided to conduct joint exercises,” without giving details.

North Korea’s ballistic missile launch in the early hours of September 4 was Pyongyang’s first missile launch over Japan in five years. It prompted Japan to activate an emergency alert system and send people in some areas to shelters. The missile then crashed in waters outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, causing no casualties or damage.

This is the fifth time China has launched a missile North Korea within the past 10 days. Analysts say continued test launches of short- and long-range missiles help North Korea test the capabilities of its active weapons, design new ones, and send a message that weapons development is their sovereign and the world needs to accept that.
Experts also worry that the test could be a precursor to North Korea’s testing of more modern weapons, including bombs or nuclear warheads.
