People with a witty, charming way of talking are often noticed and loved by many people. If you also want to bring laughter to everyone around, immediately apply some of the tips below to make talking less boring, funny and more interesting.
#first. Combine different things
This is the humorous method of Juxtaposition, when you talk about two (or more) things that don’t usually go together. The comparison and contrast between the two makes their differences stand out even more, creating humorous absurdity.
In an episode of The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon asked Will Ferrel:
- What do you plan to do “cool” on during the holidays? (with the implication asking if he did something rebellious)
Will Ferrell:
- Oh, yes, that’s great.
But then, Ferrel listed some traditional activities like going out with her mother-in-law.
The audience had to laugh because “very cool” and Ferrel’s actual plan doesn’t seem to be very similar.
This is a great way to make it easy to come up with funny and witty sentences because it’s observant. When you notice silly contrasts and amusing links, point them out!
For example, if someone asks what the weather is like when you know it’s raining, you might answer “it’s beautiful, especially in this hot summer”.
#2. Turning point
How many times have you had to laugh at stories with unexpected endings? This is an extremely successful way of humor because it uses the element of surprise.
In another conversation, Will Ferrel talked about his experience for the first time at the Oscars. You will hear him talk about his flashy presence on the red carpet. The paparazzi kept calling his name: “Will, look in my direction”. That left Will Ferrel feeling rather confused.
But in the end, Ferrel discovered that, the person being called was Will Smith (standing next to him) not him. This situation is unexpected and funny, isn’t it?
Notice and capture moments like objects in your life and tell them into a story. Stories of surprise and irony like this never go out of style for laughter.
#3. Surprise answer
All you need to do is give an unexpected answer to an ordinary question. This makes the most sense when in so common questions it is easy to think of an answer.
For example, if a chef is asked: “are you a good cook?”. Usually, both the respondent and the rest of us think he’ll say, “Yes, I’m not the best, but I’m doing what I love.” Very normal and understandable, right?
To get laughter from the people around, the chef replied, “It seems like I haven’t sent anyone to the hospital for a long time because of my food.”
Next time someone asks you a question that’s too easy to answer, say something new and contradictory.
#4. Recall
A hint is a joke, a funny event happened – it’s a funny way. When you and the people around you laugh at some funny information, memorize it. When people have forgotten it, you can suddenly repeat it to make them laugh even louder than the first time.
Suppose, if Van said that as a child she had a crush on Simba in the movie The Lion King. You all giggled and continued to share childhood stories.
Later in the evening, when you’re planning your next group outing, suggest: “We should go to the zoo next, maybe we’ll help Van meet her crush again!”.
