Taiwan’s Thunderbolt-2000 rocket artillery complex exploded during an exercise because a bullet got stuck in its launch tube.

“When the complex opened fire, the projectile got stuck in the launch tube for unknown reasons. The rocket propellant exploded, causing damage to the launcher,” said a spokesman for the Taiwan Self-Defense Force’s Fourth Theater. There were no casualties.
Taiwanese media reported that locals heard loud explosions and billowing smoke from the rehearsal site. The island’s defense forces later suspended all exercises in the area.
This is the first incident involving the Raiden 2000 rocket launcher, which has been in service in Taiwan’s defense since 2012, and is expected to significantly enhance Taiwan’s defense capabilities.

Thunderbolt-2000 was first introduced in 1997 and was designed to combat amphibious assault and nearshore vessels.
The Thunderbolt-2000 uses three types of ammunition, including the Mk.15 117mm range 15km, the Mk.30 180mm range 30km and the Mk.45 227mm range 45km. Each Thunderbolt-2000 launcher can carry 6-20 rocket tubes, depending on the type.
