Russia launched a special military operation “demilitarization and defascization of Ukraine” on February 24. Since the beginning of the campaign, Russian forces have regularly attacked Ukrainian positions with cruise and ballistic missiles, and fired hypersonic missiles several times.
U.S. officials said in late May that the missiles used by Russia in the Ukrainian airstrikes were “generally inaccurate, but it is worth noting that they have fired as many as 1,500 missiles since Ukraine launched its military campaign.” They assessed the Russo-Ukrainian war as a period when rocket launchers were operating at their highest capacity since World War II.
Iskander is a solid-propellant single-stage rocket equipped with a satellite navigation system. It is 7.2 meters long, 0.95 meters in diameter, has a launch mass of 3.8 tons, and has a maximum range of 500 kilometers. It can also carry conventional warheads as nuclear warheads.
The highlight of the Iskander is its ability to penetrate any missile defense system in the world. Each projectile has a top speed of 9,350 km/h and features an ever-changing flight path and launch traps to counteract enemy interception efforts.
This missile was first used in actual combat in Georgia in 2008 and was able to hit targets with an error of 2-5 m. “It has the ability to strike and destroy designated targets with precision,” said Timothy Wright, an expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). “Russia has about 150 Iskander launchers.”
