President Putin said that Russia could replace Nord Stream 1 with a pipeline connecting Turkey or Nord Stream 2.
President speaks today at energy conference in Moscow Russia Vladimir Putin He proposes to use a pipeline to transport natural gas through Nord Stream 1 to Turkey. This would make Turkey “the largest gas transshipment hub in Europe”.
Putin did not name the pipeline, but the only natural gas pipeline connecting Russia to Turkey and Europe is TurkStream via the Black Sea, with an annual capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters. In addition to Turkey, TurkStream supplies energy to a handful of European countries such as Serbia and Hungary, which Russia considers “friendly.”
The Russian leader added that the country’s gas could also be supplied to Europe through the full pipeline section of Nord Stream 2. Each Nord Stream pipeline consists of two parallel pipelines. Two pipes from the Nord Stream 1 system and Nord Stream 2 Pipeline A leaked last month and are believed to have been damaged.
Putin said the pipeline could be repaired, and it was up to Russia and the EU to decide its fate, stressing that the pipeline must be kept safe.

Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Domes told the meeting that it was the first time he had heard the Russian president make the proposal, so it was too early to make an assessment and further discussions were needed.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak later said that Moscow would consider building an additional route for TurkStream. “This is one of the options that needs to be studied,” Nowak said.
A German government spokesman immediately responded to Putin’s remarks, saying that Germany would not get Russian gas through Nord Stream 2, but it could still get Russian gas through Nord Stream 1.
“There is no gas source going through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which is not supplied by Russia. If the Russian government wants to send gas via Nord Stream 1, there is currently no prohibition to do so,” a German government spokesman said.

Nord Stream 1 is Russia’s largest natural gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea to Germany, with an annual gas transmission capacity of 55 billion cubic meters. Russian energy group Gazprom announced on September 2 that it would stop operating the pipeline because of the main turbine at the Portovaya compression station near St. Petersburg. Completed by the end of 2021, Nord Stream 2 will run almost parallel to Nord Stream 1 and is designed to transport gas from Russia across the Baltic Sea to Germany without going through Ukraine or Poland, doubling Russia’s gas supply to Germany to 110 billion per barrel cubic meter year. Berlin indefinitely delayed the granting of a license for the Nord Stream 2 nuclear power plant on February 22, two days before Russia began its military operations in Ukraine.
