Crooks was flying the small plane with another pilot when the plane failed to land on the landing gear. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing at the local Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and the remaining pilots were taken to hospital for treatment.
There have been many questions surrounding Crookes’ death, whether he fell from the plane while trying to fix the problem, or whether the pilot chose to jump from it out of panic.
Police said Crooks’ body fell about 9 to 10 metres from a house and the resident reported it to authorities because “he heard a loud noise from the back of the house”.
At a news conference the same night, Fuquivarina Police Chief Brandon Medina said Crooks’ body fell from a height of at least 1,100 meters. It is unclear whether the pilot died before the crash, but authorities are continuing to investigate.
Crooks’ family said he recently got his pilot’s license and loves flying. The pilot who was on the plane with Crooks has been released from hospital after being treated for minor injuries, local television reported.
