The 13-year-old boy took care of himself and his pet during the 66 days his parents were trapped under Shanghai’s lockdown order.
On February 28, a couple from Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province went to Shanghai to treat their husband. However, they were not allowed to return to Kunshan until the end of April due to Shanghai’s lockdown order to prevent a severe Covid-19 outbreak.
During that time, the 13-year-old boy lived alone. In addition to online classes, the boy has to take care of himself and the pets at home.
After another week in the isolation ward, the boy’s parents were able to go home on May 6. The mother, surnamed Zhu, noticed that her son and two pets had gained weight while the couple was away.
Zhu said she still called the boy to deliver food in March, but the service was suspended in April as the Kunshan community was locked down to prevent the spread of the virus. Zhu was worried about his son, and cried while talking to him on the phone.
“The boy was optimistic and assured me, ‘Why are you crying? You don’t have to worry about anything, just teach me to cook,'” Zhu said.

Community workers help by delivering lunch boxes to the boy each day. When my son does not go to school on weekends, Teacher Zhu will teach him to cook simple dishes.
“I’ve stocked up on some food before I go out, like roast chicken and chicken wings. When they get tired of prepared meals, they ask me to teach them how to cook,” Zhu said.
The boy also cleaned cat litter, walked the dog and bathed two animals. Although the boy can take good care of himself and his pets, when the Zhu couple returned home, they found that the house was dirty and messy.
“We don’t have a place to put our feet down, but I’m not angry, I’m just heartbroken,” Zhu said. “My son is generally lazy and not as independent as his peers. I have to commend him for spending more than two months alone, he never complained and often comforted us. She was much stronger, It’s more optimistic than we thought.”
Shanghai, a city of more than 25 million people, has been under lockdown since early April, and authorities have since eased some areas, but have yet to announce when the restrictions will be fully lifted. There were 322 new symptomatic cases and 3625 asymptomatic cases in Shanghai yesterday. As of May 7, the number of infected people in the city has exceeded 600,000, with 547 deaths.
