Is it worth the upgrade?

iPhone 14 series launched at Apple Event September 2022 and we have seen its difference from previous generations.

So are these two regular machines (iPhone 14 and 14 Plus (Max)) worth buying more than the iPhone 13, when you can’t tell it apart from the old iPhone 13 series?

#first. About the screen and camera

iPhone 14 has a screen size of 6.1 inches Super Retina XDR OLED and 6.8 inches on the iPhone 14 Plus version.

The screen resolution is both 2K + (2532 x 1170 pixels for iPhone 14 and 2778 x 1284 pixels for iPhone 14 Plus) with a pixel density of 460 PPI.

This iPhone duo retains the same notch design as the iPhone 13 series, has True Tone technology (automatically adjusts screen light according to ambient light) and Wide Color P3.

This iPhone duo does not have the feature to change the scan frequency to save battery, depending on usage conditions like the Pro version.

The selfie camera of the device is still 12MP, with a 3D sensor for Face ID. The rear camera is still a duo camera cluster with a 12MP main camera, using a new larger sensor and 12MP ultra wide camera.

In addition, this new Phone 14 series has completely removed the physical sim tray, but instead it will use 2 eSims, but those are machines for the US market 🙂

As for other markets, (including Vietnam) will still be equipped with a physical sim tray and an esim as usual.

#2. About design

As mentioned above, with iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, APPLE retains the same design as the iPhone 13 with a glossy back, a cluster of 2 diagonal cameras in the left corner of the back, rabbit ears, glossy square aluminum borders, ….

The screen of this duo will have a ceramic coating to prevent fingerprints. The device retains the familiar lightning charging port instead of the rumored USB Type-C port.

The device is available in 5 colors: Midnight Black, Purple Purple, Blue Blue, Starlight Silver and Product Red (RED).

#3. About configuration

The device (probably) will have 4GB of Ram, because Apple did not mention this parameter in the event, along with ROM (internal memory) options of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

Both devices run a custom version of the A15 Bionic chip that has been optimized with a slightly stronger CPU and GPU than on the iPhone 13 Series.

iOS 16 operating system will be released before the opening date for both these devices and 2 more Pro.

There is also no information on the battery capacity for this duo, but Apple has given the usage time for them as follows:

• 20 to 26 hours of video playback for iPhone 14 and 14 Plus
• 16 to 20 hours of video streaming
• 80 to 100 hours of music playback

Besides, the device can charge up to 50% in 30 minutes with fast wired charging, supporting wireless charging up to 15W.

#4. Personal rating

The device will cost from $ 799 for iPhone 14 and from $ 899 for iPhone 14 Plus. This is also the starting price for last year’s iPhone 13 series, which is $799 for the iPhone 13 Mini and $899 for the iPhone 13, respectively.

The iPhone Plus line has been neglected since the iPhone 8, and then this year it’s back to what it used to be: Bigger screen size and longer battery life.

After 2 years of launching the iPhone Mini version along with 2 very mini iPhone SEs, APPLE has decided not to make iPhone 14 Mini anymore. Because the product structure of iPhone 14 is changing.

The device supports satellite “rescue” and dual eSim, features that cannot be used or are not suitable for use in our country’s market. Crash Detecion can still be used as it is not vendor dependent..

Improvements in hardware and camera algorithms make the camera significantly better at night, with more effective anti-shake, and the front camera also comes with the ability to focus in low-light environments.

At first glance, it looks like you’ve got a bargain when you just spend the same amount of money as last year’s iPhone 13 Mini to get an iPhone 14, or spend the same amount as last year’s iPhone 13 for a larger iPhone 14.

However, the other two iPhone 13s have not been declared dead yet. So what is the purpose of these two machines?

As always, there will be a signature iPhone for the whole series, and this year it is the iPhone 14 Plus.

Apple always knows how to create new machine recognition for machines in the sub-$900 price range to boost sales for the machine itself, along with the machines launched last year.

With the same design, the same A15 chip, the same size, who will buy the iPhone 14 instead of the new iPhone 13 that is still in production and the price is more affordable?

That’s why the iPhone 14 will be the prey for the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 14 Plus. You use iPhone 14, they say it’s iPhone 13. But you use iPhone 14 as big as iPhone 14 Pro Max, they know it’s iPhone 14 Plus.

With the reuse of the old design and the old chip, but at the same time still making 2 Minis and usually like last year, and still maintaining the production of iPhone 13 and 13 Mini, we can guess, 2 iPhones 13 and 13. iPhone 13 Mini will kill the sales of 2 iPhone 14.

The A15 chip is reused. Even if they optimize the performance of the processor WHOCPU and GPUit’s still the APPLE A15 with the same features and technology.

It seems that Apple’s chip supply is really in trouble, or they simply don’t want to upgrade it. When compared with APPLE A16, you will find this to be valid!

The device will open for pre-order in the US on September 9 and open for sale on September 16. Of course, if your needs are not too picky, buying iPhone 13 or iPhone 14 Plus will be a better choice if you just want to upgrade the device.

Of course, you can consider 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max if you have more money!
