ChinaFigure skater Chen Kailun drew attention by wearing a dress her mother made for the Beijing Olympics.
“I was wearing a figure skating dress my mom made and she did 90 percent of the dress and I contributed 10 percent and complimented ‘Oh, it looks beautiful'”, 22-year-old figure skater Karen Chen of Team USA, Ben Zhou shared at the Beijing Olympics.
The competition uniform that Chen’s mother made for her is mainly light purple, and there are many patterns on the V neck extending to the end of the flap to create more accents. The American athlete said she liked the butterfly pattern on the dress best because it was crafted by her mother to make her look like a beautiful butterfly flying over the ice.
Chen also played Butterfly Lovers’ music during an Olympic performance earlier this week. She completed the exam with a score of 131.52, ranking fourth. The entire U.S. Athlete team finished the team event with 65 points, earning a silver medal.
“It’s been an exciting journey. I’m proud and grateful to be a part of the team,” Chen shared on his Instagram account after winning the medal.
