IndonesiaA woman in Aceh province was given 100 lashes for adultery, while a man suspected of being her lover was given only 15 lashes.
Ivan Najjar Alavi, head of the investigation unit of the Eastern Prosecutor’s Office in Aceh, said on January 13 that a married local woman was whipped 100 times after admitting adultery.
The man suspected of being her lover, the head of a local fishing agency and also married, was given only 15 lashes for denying the adultery charge. Allawi added that the judge found it “very difficult” to convict the man.
“During the trial, he admitted nothing and denied all charges. So the judge could not prove his guilt,” Allawi told the media.

The man did not commit adultery but was punished for “showing love to a woman who was not his wife”. He was initially sentenced to 30 lashes, but his appeal was successful and he was reduced to 15 lashes.
The pair were first caught by locals on a palm oil plantation in 2018.
Aceh is the only region in the Muslim-majority country that enforces Sharia law, allowing public caning of those found guilty of gambling, adultery, drinking and homosexuality.
